Day 12 Oct 29 2009 - Making New Friends

After we had send out the use cases the previous night, Soon and I went to work relieved, having achieved our goal of delivering by Wednesday evening. As Mohammadi had asked us to come up with an estimate of the implementation of the solution, we contacted IBM India for some help on this. Within a few hours we received a call from the respective IBM Territory Sales person with whom we agreed to meet the next day to discuss matters with SEWA's IT team.
For the evening we scheduled our rikshaw driver to come half an hour later as usual as we were planning to take a walk of the neighbourhood. We went out from the SEWA building to the right were we saw many small and smallest textile production companies. Another right an we were on the road again which we just followed. As usual people were greeting us with a friendly Namaste or Hello on the street. Once we had taken the first pictures, people approached us to have their taken as well. We were also approached by two boys who obviously wanted to show us something, so we followed them to their house just 50m down the street. There most of their family was waiting for us and invited us into their little house where they offered us water and chai as well as cookies. As there English skills were little, most communication took place via Pallavi, the 17 year-old daughter of the house who speaks a little English - good enough for some basic conversation. Time went by quickly and we had to leave to not have our rikshaw wait for too long. We took some pictures of our new friends and promised to be back for dinner the following week. Wow, our first invitation to a private Indian home.
As we were already ten minutes late, Soon and I jogged back making people around us wonder what was wrong with us. And true enough, so far we had not seen any Indian person rushing from A to B. People here just in general seem to have a different perception of time.
